The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War was founded in 1881 as a successor to the GAR for the sons of Civil War Veterans. Membership to this organization is open to any male over 14 years old who is a descendant of someone who served in any branch of the US armed

forces between 1861 and 1865.

The SUV’s mission is to honor veterans and to preserve historical Civil War artifacts. At its height, the society has 200,00 members and is still active today with 6,000 members.
